What is BioThane?

BioThane is the brand name for coated webbing products manufactured by BioThane Coated Webbing Corp in the United States. This is original BioThane, made from polyester webbing with a PVC BETA or TPU GOLD coating.

Thanks to this coating, BioThane is more durable, waterproof, and easier to clean than leather. It is widely used for horse halters, harnesses, lunge lines, and dog collars.

BioThane is mainly used in the manufacture of horse halters, harnesses, lunge lines, and dog collars. BioThane straps can be ordered by the meter. You will receive the total number of meters in one piece, it also possible to buy a full roll and save around 20%! Please note that the maximum length per roll is 30 meters.

Types of BioThane

BioThane is a polyester webbing wrapped in a protective coating, and the coating you choose changes how the material looks, feels and performs. Here's a breakdown of the main types:

  • Beta BioThane PVC coating, matte finish, the softest and most flexible option, even in cold conditions
  • Gold BioThane TPU coating, glossier finish, slightly stiffer with less cold flexibility than Beta
  • Grippy BioThane Beta coating with a raised textured surface, designed to stay secure in your hand even when wet
  • Round BioThane Beta coating in a round, rope-like profile instead of flat webbing

Is "Beta" BioThane?

Yes, "Beta" is a registered coating class of BioThane, made from PVC rather than the TPU used for Gold. In practice, Beta feels smoother and stays flexible in cold weather, while a roll of Gold can stick to itself slightly when unrolled due to the TPU surface. Most of our BioThane products use this Beta coating, including our 13 mm Beta 520 series, which has a breaking strength of roughly 220 kg and is a popular choice for small to medium dog collars, leashes and horse halters.

For a decorative finish beyond the standard colour range, we also offer a wide selection of UV-printed BioThane patterns, printed directly onto the Beta coating.
